:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carolyn Wulfhorst -- Very good reading. : Couldn’t put it down! Very well researched. Very well written. I feel like I was there. Good historical fiction. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from TJReads -- Great Civil War story! : I was so excited to receive an ARC of this story, I am born, raised and have lived in Missouri my whole 64 years. I have done some research of the Civil War in Missouri plus toured the Battleground in Springfield and the Lexington sites. But nothing I had seen or done could have shown or let me experience what the actual soldiers, prisoners and families went through as this wonderful historical fiction did. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Howard M. Federspiel -- Surviving in a brutish hell of a war. : This is a tale well woven by the author, James Woolard, who has again proven himself to be a first-rate story teller about the civil war. Here he takes on the terrible war among citizens of Kansas and Nebraska during the civil war which was marked by the cruelist sort of actions humans can visit on one another. He sends his young protagonist, Owen, straight into the cauldron and describes his efforts to surivive in ever changing circumstances, none of them to his advantage and all of them challenging to his own life and future. Woolard paints a picture of good men and women caught up in the war, trying to survive without losing their dignity or values. It cost many of them their lives. As is usual in a Woolard novel the characters are well-described and sympathetic, his hero slightly naive, but able, and the plot believable. It reads fast and the reader can easily become transfixed with wanting to know on one page just what is going to happen on the next. One is never disappointed. Read it, by all means! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kdlink -- I miss Owen! : If you've read Dr. Woolard's work, you know he is historically and factually detailed and accurate. As someone who cooks and enjoys a good meal and occasional bourbon, I savored his descriptions of tasty food and drink. For an animal lover, it's re-enforcing to read caring for dogs and horses defines human character. Jim weaves that trait into the storyline. Canine and equine behavior is well documented. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bob -- Inside story of the Civil War : Better than anyone, Jim Woolard explores the nuances of North versus South in this novel. His main character gets thrown from side to side in an amazing series of events. Every twist and turn is riveting and gives us an inside view of what it was really like in the war. It was different than you think! This is a good read! Highly recommended. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lauren -- Gripping Historical Fiction : Woodlard did an amazing job with "When The Missouri Ran Red". The wealth of information and placement of it really immerses you in the story. His main character, Owen Wainwright's, growth from childhood naivety to manhood is such an interesting adventure that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
